About CELTA

CELTA stands for “Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults”. It is the original certificate course in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) or teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), and it has been running for four decades. It is highly respected and recognized globally, with 7 out of 10 employers worldwide asking applicants to have it.

Teachers’ contest ahoy! Peeping through a unique window of opportunity or how to do your CELTA free of charge!

Author: Ilinca Stroe

For any teacher, holding a certificate which bears the seal of Cambridge University, attests your capability to teach English to non-natives, and is recognised internationally is a huge professional advantage. The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) opens windows of opportunity for its holder to access good teaching jobs in established language centres, schools and educational institutions in a huge number of countries around the globe.

The Certificate is awarded on successful completion of a course which lasts between four and 26 weeks or longer, can be done full-time or part-time, and can cost anywhere from £1,150 to over £1,500, depending on the location and reputation of the centre where you enrol, and whether it’s face to face or online. Besides that amount, which covers only the course fee, the face-to-face training implies substantial additional costs for the living expenses. In short: doing your CELTA can be quite an investment for which aspiring trainees sometimes save up for months or years…

That’s why contests for teachers that have as first prize a free CELTA course are almost nonexistent. Except there is one just coming up. And you’d better not miss it, if you want to get the precious international teaching qualification. The contest, “IH SuperTeacher Challenge”, is organised by International House (IH) Bucharest and aims to encourage practising or aspiring teachers of English to pursue their professional development.

Why would you participate? For a good number of good reasons!

  1. You can do for free a qualification course leading to a valuable Cambridge certificate – one can never insist too much on that.
  2. You feel professionally stimulated by the challenge of creating a competitive contest entry (3-minute video).
  3. You measure your teaching worth, talent and competence bravely against other competing peers.
  4. Even if you don’t win the first prize, you still have a chance to get one of the two second prizes in play.

Specifically, the first prize consists of a fee exempt CELTA course run by IH Bucharest, and you can choose between the 4-week face-to-face course held in Bucharest from 1 to 26 August 2022, and the 11-week course held online from 1 October to 17 December 2022. The two second prizes available consist of significant discounts on upcoming CELTA courses at IH Bucharest. Again, you can choose either the 15% (£195) discount on the aforementioned August or October-December courses, or the 30% (£390) discount on the part-time online course starting in January 2023.

Interested, now? If your answer is “yes”, there here’s what you to have to do to participate:

  1. get familiar with the contest’s Official Rules, which include the theme, timeline and eligibility terms
  2. complete and submit the application form by 1 May 2022
  3. make a 3-minute video recording on the contest theme and send it via https://wetransfer.com/ to marketing@ih.ro by 1 May 2022

Who is going to assess the video entries, and how? What content are you (not) allowed to include in your video entry? Is this competition fair and an equal opportunity event? How is the data you enter going to be processed and used? When are you going to find out if you’ve won?  All of your questions are answered in the Official Rules and on the contest web page.

And how about the course trainers? Are they usually nice? Are they competent? Helpful and supportive? And the input? And the teaching practice? Why don’t you learn about all of that from the IH Bucharest CELTA graduates?

To wrap up, this is a unique contest which should really not be missed. It is not only exceptionally advantageous, but it also welcomes with open arms both more or less experienced teachers, and basically anyone of age who dreams of becoming an English teacher. We look forward to you signing up!
